Imogen F Wilson Education Foundation

The mission of the Imogen F. Wilson Education Foundation at the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site is to protect and preserve the prehistoric and historic features of the site, and to provide visitors with educational opportunities to increase their understanding of the history of the land use in the Mimbres Valley by experiencing the Mattocks Ruin, the Wood and Gooch houses, and the land itself.

From April through October: open daily 11 AM - 3 PM. November through March, open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 11 AM - 3PM except Christmas and New Years.
First Saturday of each month: 1 PM, walking tour of the site.
May 12: Mother's Day Celebration - tours, book sale, music 10AM - 3PM
June: UNLV Field School and local students participate in the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site Experiential Preservation activities
July 28-29, 2018: Annual Hummingbird Festival at the Museum site. 8 AM - 3PM. Vendors, hummingbird banding, speakers, gift shop and museum open to public, music, face painting by Curl Up and Dye volunteers, food, ice cream sales and tours
October 13, Open House and Gooch Murder Re-enactment, tours, gift shop and museum open to the public

MCHS Kids Camp and Experiential Preservation

Program Description

Young students can participate in a 2 day overnight, hands-on, workshop to learn about archaeology. They will assist UNLV students in the field as a part of the overall learning experience. This program can host 10 students, two sessions each June.

Define Long Term Success:

​Students may enter the fields of science in college. They will be aware of the ethics of archaeological preservation.

Define Short Term Success:

Students will learn via hands-on experiences and become aware of site stewardship and the ethics of preserving history

How Do you Monitor Progress?

​Adult observation and student input through participation and written essay.

Evidence of Program Success:

​In the future, students becoming responsible adults pursuing knowledge and being site watch and site stewards of archaeological sites. Many ask to return for the next year's participation.

Program Description

The public can experience the capturing and banding of Mimbres hummingbirds. Vendors sell wares, the Mimbres Museum is open. Tours of the Mattocks Site Archaeology Site are scheduled. Lots of fun!
